Key Fact:
Do You Know The History of the Handbag and Why It Became So Popular?
The first contemporary clutch, pouch, or handbag emerged in England during the Industrial Revolution, when the country saw a rise in the number of people riding railroads. In 1841, while on a trip with his wife, English industrialist and candy tycoon Samuel Parkinson (famous for his butterscotch) saw that his wife's purse was too small and made of a material that wouldn't hold up throughout the trip. He promptly placed an order for luggage and trunks, and demanded that she have her own bag. So that she wouldn't blend in with the crowd at formal events while carrying one of the then-common carpetbags and other travelers' fabric bags used by members of the popular classes, he requested that the leather from his cases and trunks be used to make his wife a variety of handbags in different sizes. In response to the order, H. J. Cave (London) designed the first clutch and tote set in the annals of modern luxury handbags (called a "ladies traveling case"). Intentionally abandoned in Amsterdam's Bag Museum. Despite widespread criticism that H. J. Cave's purses were unneeded and too heavy, cumbersome, and "broke the backs of women," the business persevered in promoting and selling them in much the same way. Even though H. J. Cave mostly made trunks after 1865, they sometimes made purses for celebrations like the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 2012. Still, in 2010, H.J. Cave resumed production of its handbags.
